If you think alocasia 'Polly' is a looker then please meet alocasia 'Purpley'! This hybrid alocasia is very similar to 'Polly' but has intense purple stems and uber purple back of leaf. To me 'Purpley's veining is more intense, the purple is intense....it's just super intensely cool! The glossy leaves make is look almost irridescent or silverish in bright light. Alocasia 'Purpley' is a tropical plant that grows in warm, semi-moist and high humidity given a natural environment. It's a hybrid so they do not have an actual country of origin but they are considered understory plants which means they grown under the canopy of larger palms, trees and shrubs in part sun/part shade so as a house plant their light requirements are considered bright light. Here in South Florida they can take a small amount of direct sunlight as it passes through the upper layers of plant canopies. They are one of the smaller alocasia varieties but 'Purpley' grows much larger than 'Polly' and can get to be about 24-36 inches high with large long arrowhead pointy leaves. Grows outdoors in zone 9-11; not frost hardy.
Our alocasia 'Purpley' are currently sold in a 1-gallon container and are nice and full; currently around 18-24 inches high.
