Philodendron atabapoense is soooo beautiful with a unique green color on the front side of the leaf and a light rose-maroon color on the back side.  So when bright light shines through the leaves, the combination of the two colors illuminate the leaves, creating a glowing gemstone in philodendron atabapoense.  You can see in one of the pictures how the bright light glows through a juvenile leaf.  The linear leaf grows really large and sits upright holding on a long stalk which goes back to main stalk and root section, giving it an oddly graceful clambering effect.  Eventhough the leaf has an erect look it also has a loose hangout vibe like your hippie parents in the 1960's.  If you like Philodendron billietiae you will love P. atabapoense.  Philodendron billietiae has an orangish/yellowish coloration while P. atabapoense has a orangish/reddish/purple coloration.  Why more people don't have these in their collections is beyond me.

Like all aroids, P. atabapoense grows in warm high humidity, moist soil and bright light.  We currently have them growing in part sun/part shade as understory plants under palm canopy.  If growing as a houseplant they will usually need some sort of pole or branch to grow on as they get larger.  In their indigenous environment you would see them either sprawling on the forest floor or clambering up a tree or palm trunk.   Philodendrons are great climbers and can attach themselves to grow on a wall and tree/palm trunk for a spectacular display.  They can also grow along the ground if growing in the landscape looking for something to cling to.

Though be aware for all you pet owners and parents to check whether any plant has poisonous elements to it before introducing it as a house plant. The philodendron family is considered poisonous if parts of the actual plant are ingested.  Here is a link for your concerns on the symptoms and treatment for philodendrons because we are animal lovers and parents as well.

Our philodendron atabapoense is sold in a 6-inch pot.  Like our philodendron tortum's, these beauties are huge and have out grown the pots; approx. 36-48 inches long.   Because it is a living plant we expedite shipping to make sure the plant arrives healthy and alive.   Please read the section about our plants on our FAQs page for more information.
