Our spathoglottis collection has some super unique ground orchid species and hybrids growing in our nursery. Spathoglottis, aka ground orchids, can be grown in full sun with consistant watering and like part sun/part shade, but they don't like full or deep shade. Depending on the specific variety, the plant itself grows from 2 ft to 4 ft high while the flower spikes reach between 1 1/2 ft to 3 ft higher than the plant. They grow in a clustered bunch and overtime grow new bulbs into a beautiful larger mass. They can grow in a variety of soils but like rich organic soil full of nutrients the best. When they're happy, they bloom constantly year round. Like most flowering plants, they require constant food, so using a slow release fertilizer like osmocote makes them happy and in turn you happy. 'Plicata species' ground orchid plant grows to be about 3 1/2-4 ft high and the flowers can reach about 4 1/2-5 ft high. A really easy plant to grow in your garden!
Our current availability is: the light purple 'plicata species' (the tallest of all the ground orchids), the solid bright yellow 'sassy sunshine', the dark magnenta purple with yellow throat 'plicata grapette' (one of the smallest of the ground orchids), the multi-colored yellow/pink/orange ombre 'Southwood sunrise' and the magenta/pink/white spotted with yellow throat called 'SoFla sprinkles'. So which one(s) are you going to choose? Currently all of the ground orchids listed are sold in 1 gallon pots because of it's more affordable shipping price though we do have 3 gallon pots available by request. The 3 gallons are a much larger plant so some may find it worth the shipping cost. The pricey cost of shipping is the only reason why we haven't listed them but if you're willing to pay for shipping we are willing to ship! :)
You won't find these orchids growing in the trees, they are actual plants grown in the ground, hence the name. Ground orchids can be grown in your landscape as long as your weather is warm enough since they won't survive frost. These tropical plants also do great in pots so if your weather is cooler in your area, you will need to bring the pot indoors during your winter months. The best hardiness zones to grow spathoglottis directly in the ground are zones 10-12; possibly zone 9. Daytime temps can go up to 90-100+F though they love the 80's, while nightime temps range in the 50'sF with some burning on the leaves. Anything colder than that for more than a week, we found ground orchids don't seem to come back from it.
Our ground orchids are sold in a 1-gallon and currently they're about 14-24 inches high depending on the variety. Though we do have most of the varieties in a 3-gallon as well so please contact us if you are interested in a larger plant. Because it is a living plant we expedite shipping to make sure the plant arrives healthy and alive. Please read the section about our plants on our FAQs page for more information.
